Skube: It suits us when we are not favourites

It is our 3rd season in the EHF Champions' League and in the first round we play again against the French team of Montpellier. We returned twice from Montpellier as winners at the start of the season, and at the end of the season we reached the F4 Tournament in Cologne. And again, the first round of the group phase will be a duel between two teams that have won European titles. Vardar was the European champion in 2017 and 2019, and Montpellier in 2018, as well as in 2003.
Vardar and Montpellier are part of the Champions' League group B together with Veszprem, Kielce, Motor Zaporozhye, Meshkov, Porto and Kiel. The same playing system remains – with 14 rounds after which the 1st ranked team will secure direct placement in the ¼ finals, while the teams ranked 2nd to 6th will play the 1/8 finals.
In the last 5 years, Vardar was more successful than Montpellier. Out of 7 matches, Vardar won 5, one match ended without a winner and they lost one match on the 2017/18 F4 tournament in Cologne. Last year, these teams played twice – at the start of the season in France when Vardar won with 27:24 and in Skopje they also celebrated with 33:27.
"The team is a bit changed this season, and we have problems with injuries. Many of the players that won the title in June are still here. I think we are well prepared, physically and tactically, and it will be a real fight. We expect a tough match, probably the goal-difference will be 1-2 goals. Related to winning the title, we are probably the favourites, but in the last 6-7 years, the favourite never won the title, therefore attacking from background suits us. We will go step by step; the season is long and is still early to make any predictions. However, I believe in my teammates and I think a nice year is ahead of us" – said Stash Skube.
Vardar will play the Champions' League group phase for the 13th time. So far, they played 142 matches and won 69. The red-black team holds the 14th place on the eternal list and it's the most successful Macedonian team.
Stojanche Stoilov and Jose Toledo are still injured and will not play the match in France.
The match will start at 17:15 with a live broadcast on МRT 1.
