Daniel Jurishic: You need to work and commit to achieve success

Daniel Jurishic has been part of Vardar family since the very beginning. He also worked with the Vardar women's team that reached the F4 tournament in Budapest, although he achieved the biggest success with men when they became European champions in 2017. Popular in the sports circles, Jurishic has also won the Olympic gold with the Croatian national team in 2004, and 4 EC and WC silver medals.

In order for the team to endure all efforts during the season, it needs to be tactically and physically prepared. Any idea of the coach can be fulfilled if the players can endure the pace that the coach or the opponent would impose. If you have the strength, the tactics is easier to carry out, you could easily oppose and show your own superiority.
Unlike those from the coaching staff that sit on the bench during the match, each team has its own "background people." They care about many things, and one of those is the physical condition.
When he starts the training session, everyone knows that there will be a "condition upgrade." Sometimes they are not comfortable because instead of playing with a ball they have to run in a circle or jump. However, all of that is part of one goal, to be the best.

* The beginning of the season is a period when few athletes, even handball players, do not prefer because then they have to work on their physical fitness and very little with a ball. Do the players like you in this period?
- Real athletes know that they need it and they need to go through that period of one month or five weeks before matches start. In handball, we start at the end of July and the preparations last until the end of August or the beginning of September. In principle, the handball players, or all athletes, prefer the gym more than running, although both are needed.

* What is important for every athlete to be physically prepared during the whole season?
- We actually work throughout the whole season. Not just those four or five weeks of preparation. During the season, condition should be maintained. A lot depends on the head coach, how much he/she will allow you to work on fitness during the season. However, we maintain physical condition throughout the season. That's why we run once a week and work out twice in the gym. Some handball players additionally come to the gym.
* What is the job of a fitness coach in one team?
- To prepare the team physically so that it can endure the efforts of every game. We always think how to enable the club and the coach to have prepared players. But I will tell you a secret. Before the first F4 tournament in the Champions' League in Cologne when we became European champions, we had almost a month to prepare. Then we had mini-preparations and started from "zero." We did that and we played the national championship at the same time. The players could barely walk, the first ten days were hellish, but we achieved the goal.
* What is the secret of being in top shape? Physical predisposition of the athlete, sports life or is it just work?
- Work and only work. There is no secret. You have to be committed.
* What modern methods of preparation do you use, or are you more of the "old school" devotee?
- Every year there is something new during the preparation, competition and fitness phase. "Hundred years" ago we trained with a bar, we practiced on benches and made squats. We practice the same exercises now. Every novelty comes and passes. Cross-fit was popular, aerobics and many other things. Everything comes and passes. There are no old and new things. In 2004, I was the Olympic champion with Croatia. For the F4 in Cologne we worked according to the "old school program".
* Is there a connection between sports injuries and physical condition?
- I had occasions in my career when I had super-prepared athletes, but they still got injured. Not only handball players, but also other athletes I have worked with. There is something in it, but it is not crucial. You can be super-prepared and get injured.
* Do handball players like these physical preparations?
- They want to work in the gym more than just running. It depends on the player, they want to work more in the gym.
